A Short Guide On Writing A Critical Essay

Being a student, you might have come across different types of essays that you are supposed to write in your different courses. A critical essay is one of the kinds which students find difficult because of the critical evaluation, interpretation, and examination of a text or any other media or art form. A critical essay is one of the toughest forms of an essay and this is because it involves critique and assessment of someone else’s work. You just need to have an adequate understanding of the work to evaluate it.

When we say ‘evaluate’ a piece of writing or any other work, it means to first understand the concept of the work. You cannot evaluate or produce any critique when you do not have enough knowledge of the work or the subject under analysis. Take, for example, a literary piece of writing, be it a short story, novel, or poem. How can you evaluate and analyze it? Are there any means to assess the work without having any information and knowledge about it?

The answer would be an obvious ‘no’. If you are to analyze a poem then you must know who the writer is, what is the intended theme of the poem, to whom it is addressed and why. Is it a good poem or not? You need to give reasons why you think a piece of writing is good or bad. Critical essay writing is very important as it enhances and enables writers to think critically and analytically.

In critical writing, you need to take a position; either you choose to praise or condemn. But sometimes a critical essay writer uses both methods to evaluate and assess a piece of work. A work of a critic is to dig down deep into the actual intention of a writer or an artist and then to analyze what their work shows. The theme and the moral of any work have always been very significant.

There are many goals of a critical essay and writing. You may offer an unbiased and objective view of any work like to any painting. Or there can be a complete interpretation of a writer’s work or an assessment. The important thing in a critical essay is to write my essay covering all its aspects or if you choose any specific part of it. You must be very careful in your analysis because you have to address everything; the writer’s or an artist’s intention, the delivery, the audience's reaction, and presenting the weaknesses and strengths.

Having said all this, it is not easy to write a critical essay. It is foremost the toughest job to do as you need to take into consideration various aspects of the work under assessment. It might seem to be complicated but when you get to know what you are going to analyze and why there wouldn’t be any difficulty. You need to start with certain requirements of the subject and what is possibly expected of you. I never came across anyone who does not wish to exceed all expectations, myself included. I wouldn’t write my paper without following the norms. There are a few steps that you need to follow that will guide you while producing a critical essay.

Know the requirements and expectations: As a critic, you need to know what is expected of you. You need to make yourself clear about the details of the subject and if you have any problem, clarify it first.

Examine and understand the source: The source of the material under analysis is very important. You must have a clear understanding of where the work was taken. It can be a book from a library, a film, art taken from an exhibition, or a museum. When you know the source of the work taken you will be able to analyze it in the full sense. This is because sometimes, a critic might be asked to incorporate the other parts of the source in the essay as well.

Taking notes: While you study the source and the work under your analysis, you have to take small notes that may assess the source or the work itself. Taking notes is considered to be very significant in the success of a critical essay. You need to take notes of the concepts and ideas that the creator of the work incorporated into the work.

Uncover the patterns and challenges of the work: Writing a critical essay also requires identifying the primary problems, challenges, and patterns that exist in the work. The moment you identify these issues, other issues or problems will emerge which you have to address to make your critique an established one.

Providing solutions: After you identify the problems or uncover the ideas and the concepts of the creator, then you have to provide the solution for the problems. At this point, you need to make a claim and make your thesis statement about the work. You may praise it even if you identify problems or you may entirely condemn it. But any stance you take, you have to argue it by providing evidence and logic.

When you are done writing your critical essay, re-read it. You will come across various mistakes and errors so address them and then make it a complete and final draft. If you are new to writing essays, especially critical essays, look for any essay writing service available to guide you thoroughly in your writing process. Once you follow these steps stated above while producing a critical essay, you will be guided enough to write a good and well-established critical essay.
